Mòr Bheinn

The walk up Mòr Bheinn from Crieff is proper straightforward, which makes it surprisingly popular with people who want a hill without the full mountaineer faff. You're looking at a decent climb - nothing technical, just sustained - and the views across Perthshire once you're up there are genuinely worth the huffing and puffing. On a clear day you can see for miles across the Tay valley, and that's the main draw, really.

It's the sort of walk that suits walkers of moderate fitness more than casual strollers. You'll need two to three hours depending on pace, and good boots help on the rougher sections. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper leg-stretcher will get something out of it, but it's not a wander for the under-tens unless they're already keen hikers.

The nearest town is Crieff, which has cafes and shops if you need supplies beforehand. Several holiday parks sit within a few miles - Loch Earn Leisure Park and Twenty Shilling Wood are both close by, making Mòr Bheinn a decent day out if you're camping or caravanning in the area. Comrie Holiday Park and Comrie Croft offer other bases nearby if you're planning a longer stay.

Go early morning if you can. The hill gets busy on weekends, and the light's better for photographs anyway. It's free, naturally - just turn up.
