Mousecroft Pool

Tucked away in the Shropshire countryside just outside Shrewsbury, this small lake won't win any prizes for drama but makes for a peaceful hour if you're after a quiet walk. The water itself is nothing spectacular - think village pond rather than Lake District grandeur - but it's surrounded by decent footpaths that loop around through mixed woodland and open fields.

Families with young children will find it manageable, though older kids might get restless after half an hour unless they're keen on spotting waterfowl. Dog walkers seem to have claimed it as their own, and rightly so - it's the sort of place where you can let them off the lead without worry.

The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are worth bringing. There's no obvious car park that I could see, just roadside parking on the quiet lanes nearby. Free to visit, naturally.

It works well as a gentle leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around this part of Shropshire. Oxon Hall and Love2Stay are both within easy reach, and it's a decent enough excuse to get the family outdoors without committing to a full day's hiking. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy views - this is proper countryside walking rather than scenic splendour.
