Mote of Annan, Bailey

The earthen mound rises unexpectedly from flat farmland near Lockerbie, a proper raised platform that's been here since Norman times. It's the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle - basically a fortified stronghold from around the 12th century, though you'll need imagination to see it as more than a grassy hill today. The motte itself (the raised bit) would have held a wooden tower and palisade, while the bailey spread out below as the defensive courtyard. Walking round it takes maybe twenty minutes, and the views across the Lowlands are genuinely decent, particularly on clear days when you can see towards the Pennines.

Historically minded visitors will find themselves absorbed - this is a textbook example of Norman defensive architecture in Scotland, and there's real substance to the earthworks despite centuries of ploughing round them. Families with young kids might get restless; it's all exterior rambling and a bit of clambering, no visitor centre or interpretation boards. Walkers heading through this part of Dumfries & Galloway should slot it in between Lockerbie and the surrounding countryside - it's free and sits nicely if you're touring the area.

Access is straightforward from the roadside near the town, though it pays to check locally for the exact entry point. The West Moss-Side Livery & Campsite four miles away makes a comfortable base if you're spending a few days exploring these quiet rural monuments. Go on a day when the ground isn't waterlogged - Lowland clay holds water like a sponge.
