Mosshope Fell

The walk up Mosshope Fell from Moffat takes you through proper hill country without the crowds you'd find further north. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb through moorland that opens up gradually as you gain height. The views across Dumfries and Galloway get better with every hundred metres, and on a clear day you can see well beyond the immediate fells. Allow two to three hours for a comfortable round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so decent boots matter more than fitness here.

Walkers will appreciate the straightforward navigation and lack of false summits - you know where you're heading and you can actually see progress as you climb. History enthusiasts might note the sheep country around these parts, though the fell itself doesn't come with the baggage of some Scottish peaks. If you're based at one of the caravan sites near Moffat - Howslack Farm or the Caravanning Club Site are both within five miles - this makes an excellent half-day outing. Riverside Holiday Park is slightly further out but still accessible. The walk is accessible year-round, though winter can turn the moorland into a slog. Bring waterproofs as standard.
