Morse's Grove

Ancient oaks stretch their gnarled branches overhead as you follow the winding paths through this patch of old woodland just outside Gloucester. Morse's Grove might not have the fanfare of the Forest of Dean, but that's precisely what makes it special - a proper slice of Gloucestershire countryside where you can actually hear yourself think.

Dog walkers will find plenty to love here, with tracks that meander through dense canopy and the odd clearing where kids can run about safely. The paths aren't particularly challenging, making it suitable for pushchairs on the main routes, though some of the smaller trails get a bit muddy after rain.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a power march. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn sees the beech trees putting on a cracking display. Bird spotters often do well here - woodpeckers are common, and if you're quiet, you might catch sight of deer in the early morning.

With several holiday parks within easy reach, including Whitemead Forest Park and Greenacres Glamping, it makes for a lovely morning out before heading back to base. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you explore, and bring wellies if it's been wet.
