Morfa Bychan, North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve

The salt marshes at Morfa Bychan feel properly wild - a sprawling wetland reserve managed by the North Wales Wildlife Trust just outside Porthmadog. This isn't a manicured nature spot with visitor centres and marked trails. It's the real thing: mudflats, reed beds, and brackish pools where curlews and redshanks actually live, not perform for tourists.

You're here for the birds, mainly. Spring and autumn migrations are exceptional - waders flock through in serious numbers, and if you're lucky (or patient) you'll clock rarities that get the local birdwatchers animated. Summer brings breeding terns and gulls. Winter's quieter but the light across the marshes is something else when the water's high. Binoculars are essential, and a decent field guide helps.

There's no formal admission charge and no fixed hours - it's a working nature reserve, not a ticketed attraction. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about spotting; an hour's worthwhile even for a casual walk. Wear waterproof boots. The ground gets boggy after rain, and in winter the paths proper flood.

If you're camped at Black Rock Sands or Garreg Goch, this is a genuine bonus rather than a manufactured family day out. Teenagers into wildlife or photography will get something real from it. Young children without binoculars will get bored quickly. The views towards the Snowdonia hills add something, but you're not here for landscape - you're here because something feathered and interesting might appear.
