Craig Y Gesail

Getting to the summit means a proper slog up rough mountain paths, but the views across Cardigan Bay make every huffing step worthwhile. Craig Y Gesail stands as one of those lesser-known peaks that serious walkers seek out when they want to escape the crowds heading for Snowdon.

From the top, you'll see right across to the Lleyn Peninsula on clear days, with Porthmadog spread out below looking properly tiny. The climb takes about two hours from the nearest parking spots, and while it's not technically difficult, you'll need decent boots and a good level of fitness. Kids under ten might find it a bit much.

Walkers staying at nearby sites like Haven Greenacres Holiday Park or Black Rock Sands will find this makes a cracking day out, especially if you fancy earning that evening pint. The path can get boggy after rain, so check the weather before setting off. There's no café at the top - just you, the wind, and some of the finest views in North Wales.

Best tackled early morning when the light's good and before any mist rolls in from the coast. Allow half a day including the return journey, and pack a proper lunch to enjoy at the summit.
