Morfa Abererch

The beach at Morfa Abererch curves gently along the coast just outside Pwllheli, and it's the sort of place that rewards getting there early. Sand stretches wide at low tide, backed by dunes that feel properly wild - nothing manicured about them. The water's cold enough to make you gasp, but on a decent day it's got that clear quality you don't always find on the North Wales coast.

This isn't a destination beach, if I'm honest. You won't find arcades or beach huts or crowds queuing for ice cream. What you get instead is space - proper breathing room - and a gentler atmosphere than some of the busier spots around here. It suits families who want somewhere to let the kids loose without fighting for sand space, and walkers appreciate the access to the dunes and the headland beyond. Low tide reveals shells and the occasional rockpool worth investigating.

Being just a mile or so from Haven Hafan y Môr Holiday Park makes it obvious why people staying at the caravan parks in the area factor it into their plans. It's a pleasant walk from the park itself, or a quick drive if the weather turns grim. Pwllheli's got shops and cafes if you need supplies - grab a pasty before you head down.

Timing matters. Wind comes off the Irish Sea, so mornings tend to be calmer. Summer weekends can get busy with day-trippers, but midweek in shoulder seasons it's nearly empty. Worth a visit if you're based nearby, less worth the detour if you're only passing through the area.
