Moretoin Castle

The earthworks at Moretoin are what you get when Norman ambition meets the Shropshire countryside - substantial mounds and ditches that once formed a proper medieval fortress, though nowadays there's just the ghost of what stood here. You're looking at defensive banks that still command the landscape, even though the stone keep itself vanished centuries ago. It's not Instagram-ready ruins; it's the raw bones of 12th-century castle design, and for archaeology enthusiasts that's far more interesting than a prettified ruin would ever be.

Located near Shrewsbury, it's the sort of walk that rewards patient exploration. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the ground gets boggy around the lower ditches.
