The walk up Moorside Edge rewards you with proper views across the Colden Valley and beyond - the kind of perspective that makes you understand why people settle in these Pennine folds. It's not a mountain, but don't let that fool you. The moorland plateau sits high enough to deliver that sense of exposure you get from proper hills, with wind that can take your breath away on blustery days.

The approach from Elland takes you through decent countryside, gradually climbing through working farm land before opening onto heather and rough grass. The edge itself is where things get interesting - a natural vantage point that locals clearly know well. On clear days the visibility stretches far enough to make the effort worthwhile. Walkers get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find the trudge a bit unrewarding unless they're already committed hill-baggers.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours depending on your fitness and how many times you stop for the views. There's no admission charge - it's open moorland - though you'll need to respect the footpaths and any seasonal restrictions during grouse shooting season. The nearby caravan parks at Elland Hall Farm and Secret Valley Escapes make decent bases for exploring this stretch of the Pennines. Combine it with walks around Heptonstall or the Colden Valley trails if you're spending a few days in the area. Visit when the weather's set fair.
