Monument to Earl Grey

You'll spot it long before you reach it - a tall stone column rising from moorland just outside Lockerbie, impossible to miss against the Scottish sky. This is the Monument to Earl Grey, erected in the 1830s to honour the Prime Minister who pushed through the Reform Act. It's a straightforward Victorian tribute, the kind of thing that stops you in your tracks during a drive through Dumfries and Galloway.

The monument itself demands maybe twenty minutes of your time. You can walk around the base, read the inscription if you're interested in political history, and take in the views across rolling countryside. On a clear day it's genuinely pleasant - moorland stretches out in all directions, and there's something satisfying about standing at a genuine piece of 19th-century monument-building.

This isn't for everyone, mind. History enthusiasts will appreciate the context, but younger children might find themselves bored fairly quickly. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive panels - just the column and the landscape. What works is the location itself: it's convenient if you're staying at Cressfield Caravan Park nearby, or passing through the area between other attractions. Four miles away, Lockerbie is close enough for supplies and lunch, though the town itself has its own difficult history.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area. As a deliberate pilgrimage it's a bit thin on the ground, but as a short leg-stretch during a wider Dumfries and Galloway tour, it does the job.
