Montford Church

The River Severn curves sharply near Montford, and the church sits quietly on its banks just outside Shrewsbury - easy to miss if you're not looking. It's a proper country church, the sort that feels like it's been there forever, with stone walls and that particular smell of old wood and hymn books that never quite leaves. The setting is what gets you: the river, the trees, the flatness of the surrounding fields. Inside, there's decent medieval and Victorian work if you care about such things, but honestly, most people come for the walk and the peace of it.

Walkers doing circuits from Shrewsbury pass through here regularly - it's a logical stop on a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. The churchyard's pleasant enough for twenty minutes or so, and the riverside path nearby extends your time if the weather's decent. If you're into quiet country churches with historical bones, you'll appreciate it. If you need visitor facilities and interpretive boards, you won't.

It's free to look around, obviously. There's no set visiting hours posted, which means church timing - pop in when it's open, or peek through the windows if it isn't. If you're based at Royal Hill or Seven Oaks Holiday Home Park, both within striking distance, Montford makes a reasonable half-morning detour on a walk towards Wales. Don't go out of your way for it alone, but it's worth the brief visit if you're in the area.
