Rough Burrows

Rough Burrows is a proper bit of woodland that sits between Shrewsbury and the Welsh border - the kind of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's not a manicured country estate or a managed nature reserve with information boards at every turn. Instead, it's genuinely rough-around-the-edges forest where you can actually walk without feeling herded.

The woodland is dense enough to feel like you've left civilisation behind, even though you're only a few miles from town. Paths wind through the trees, though they're not always obvious - which adds to the appeal if you like a bit of navigation rather than following a marked trail. Expect muddy patches, fallen branches, and the kind of undergrowth that makes you feel you're exploring rather than strolling.

This works best for walkers who want something low-key and free from the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. Kids might find it interesting for an hour or so, but there's nothing built for entertainment - it's just trees and footpaths. Serious birders and nature types will appreciate the lack of development. Given it's accessible from Shrewsbury and close to several caravan parks - Seven Oaks and Royal Hill are only a couple of miles away - it makes a solid half-day leg-stretch if you're based in the area during a park holiday.

The real advantage is that you won't queue, you won't pay, and you won't feel like you're following a script. That's increasingly rare.
