Moel Y Llys

The walk up Moel Y Llys takes you through proper Welsh hill country - steep in places, but nothing that'll defeat a fit family or regular walker. The summit itself sits at a decent height above Talsarnau, giving you sprawling views across Gwynedd that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day. It's the sort of peak that feels like an achievement without eating up your whole afternoon.

This is a hike for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those after a gentle stroll. You'll want proper boots and should allow a good two hours each way depending on fitness. The terrain's rough in stretches - roots, rocks, boggy bits - so it demands attention underfoot. Kids aged ten and up will likely manage fine; younger ones might find it frustrating.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Barcdy is closest at just over three miles away - this makes a cracking afternoon out. Beddgelert Campsite and the glamping options at Plas Weunydd are also within striking distance if you want to base yourself nearby. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. It's free to access, naturally, and there's no set visiting hours - you're just walking up a Welsh mountain.

The real draw is the solitude and the genuine sense of getting somewhere. You won't find crowds here like you might on Snowdon. Worth doing.
