Moel Trefriw

The walk up Moel Trefriw from Betws-y-Coed is a proper workout, but the views across the Conwy Valley make it entirely worthwhile. You're looking at roughly two hours up and the same back down - steep in places, especially near the top where the path narrows through gorse and bracken. The summit sits at 600 metres and on a clear day you can see right across to the Carneddau range and south towards Snowdon itself.

It's the kind of hill that appeals to serious walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is rough and boggy in patches, so proper boots matter. You won't find crowds here like you do on some of the bigger peaks, which is precisely why it's worth the effort. Families with older kids (say, ten-plus and confident on rough ground) will manage it fine, but toddlers and anyone nervous of exposure should probably look elsewhere.

The real draw is the solitude and the genuine sense of achievement when you reach the top. There's a cairn marking the summit and views that stretch for miles. The whole experience takes a solid half-day, so factor that into your schedule if you're staying at Snowdonia Glamping Holidays or Porth Eryri nearby. The walk itself is free - just park at Betws-y-Coed and head out. Go mid-week if you can. Weekends pull in more walkers and the car park fills up fast. Autumn and spring offer the clearest views, though you're banking on decent weather regardless.
