Moel Meirch South Top

The walk up Moel Meirch's South Top isn't going to take your breath away with dramatic scenery, but it'll take your breath away through sheer exertion if you're not careful. From Caernarfon, this peak in the Gwynedd hills is a proper solid hike that rewards you with views across to Snowdonia if the weather cooperates - which, let's be honest, isn't guaranteed in North Wales.

You're looking at a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness level and which route you choose. The terrain is typical Snowdonia moorland: steep sections, rough grass underfoot, and plenty of chances to second-guess your navigation if the cloud comes down. Take an OS map or download the route beforehand because phone signal can be dodgy up there.

This is walkers' territory, not a casual stroll. Families with older kids will manage it fine; little ones in buggies, not so much. The views justify the effort, though nothing feels quite as dramatic as climbing Snowdon itself - which is partly what makes it appealing if you want the hills without the crowds.

Combine it with a wander around Caernarfon itself or head further afield to bigger peaks if the mood takes you. Access is free, and there's no set hours - just turn up, lock the car, and go. Early morning in summer gives you the best light and smallest chance of mist.
