Moel Hiraddug Hillfort

The walk up Moel Hiraddug feels properly rewarding. You're climbing to an Iron Age hillfort that dominates the landscape around Rhyl, and once you reach the summit at about 230 metres, you understand why the ancients chose this spot. The views sweep across the Vale of Clwyd to the Snowdonia peaks - on a clear day it's genuinely spectacular.

What you actually find at the top is the earthwork itself: concentric ramparts and ditches that once formed a serious defensive position. It's not flashy. There are no visitor facilities or interpretive boards, just the raw archaeology of a settlement that thrived around 500 BC. That's part of its appeal, honestly. You're looking at genuine Iron Age engineering without the theme park treatment.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The ascent takes around thirty to forty minutes from the car park, and it's a proper hill - steep enough to earn your views but manageable for most fitness levels. Families with younger kids might find the lack of facilities frustrating, and there's not much to do once you reach the top beyond having a look round and enjoying the vista. Allow two hours total including the walk back down.

Free to visit, naturally. If you're staying at Golden Sands or Parkdean Ty Mawr nearby, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading to the beach. It's that rare thing - a piece of actual history you can touch, not something cordoned off behind glass.
