Moel Darran

The walk up Moel Darran is steep, properly steep, and on a grey Welsh afternoon you'll understand why most people skip it for the easier routes. But that's the thing - it's exactly why you should go. The summit sits just outside Swansea, close enough for a morning outing yet far enough to feel like proper countryside, and the views down towards the city and coast are genuinely worth the grind up.

The peak itself is bare moorland, nothing fancy - no visitor centre, no tea shop, just you and the wind and the ridge stretching out either way. On a clear day the Gower Peninsula unfolds below like someone's spread a map across the hills. Weather's everything here though. Caught in mist and you're walking blind, views nowhere. Walkers will eat this up; it's a solid two to three-hour round trip with real elevation, and the terrain's straightforward enough even if the incline makes your legs speak. Kids might find it a slog unless they're already keen hikers.

Free to access, no facilities at the top - bring water and something to eat. Early morning's best if you want to avoid the crowd, though honestly there rarely is one. It sits well alongside the nearby Swansea parks: SWDA Riverside is only 2.7 miles away if you fancy staying put for a few days and tackling a few peaks across the area. The walk's not long but it's honest work. Proper Welsh hill walking without the faffing about.
