Moel Bron-y-rhiw

The walk up Moel Bron-y-rhiw starts easily enough from the Caernarfon side, but don't be fooled - this peak has proper teeth once you commit to the upper slopes. The views across the Menai Strait and towards Snowdonia justify every step though, and on a clear day you can see right across to Anglesey.

It's a solid two to three hours there and back, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. The path itself is well-trodden but can get boggy in places, so decent boots matter. There's no official infrastructure - no café, no facilities - which keeps it blissfully quiet compared to the honeypot summits inland. Free to access, naturally.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. The climb's steep enough to feel like an achievement without being technical or dangerous. Families with older kids (8+) can manage it, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient near the finish. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Caernarfon - Talymignedd or Dinlle are closest at under five miles - this makes a brilliant half-day outing to break up the holiday rhythm.

Go early if you can, especially in summer when the paths get busy. The light's best in afternoon, mind you. Late spring through early autumn works best; winter sees the paths turn to soup. It's not flashy or famous, but that's exactly why it's worth doing.
