Mynydd y Cilgwyn

Standing at 394 metres above sea level, this modest hill delivers surprisingly impressive views across Caernarfon Bay and the Menai Strait. The climb itself is straightforward enough - a steady ascent through rough grassland and scattered rocky outcrops that shouldn't trouble anyone with basic fitness levels.

Walkers will find the most rewarding approach from the north-west, where a well-trodden path winds up from the coastal road. Allow about an hour each way, though you'll want longer at the summit to properly appreciate the panorama. On clear days, Anglesey stretches out across the water while Snowdonia's peaks rise dramatically to the east.

Families with older children will manage this one comfortably, though it's probably too much for little legs. The terrain can get boggy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. There's no official car park - you'll need to find roadside space near the base, which can be tricky in summer.

This makes a decent half-day excursion if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Glan Gwna or Coed Helen. It's not going to challenge serious hikers, but for a gentle introduction to Welsh hill walking or a leg-stretch between beach days, Mynydd y Cilgwyn does the job nicely. Best tackled in the morning when the light favours those coastal views.
