Model Boating & Crabbing Lake

The lake sits just outside Maldon, a proper working waterway where model boat enthusiasts gather to race their vessels while families crouch at the water's edge armed with nets and buckets hoping to land a crab. It's the sort of place that rewards patience - you'll see serious hobbyists with expensive radio-controlled boats gliding across the water with military precision, and then toddlers squealing because they've actually caught something.

What makes it work is the dual appeal. Model boating types get their fix watching the craft perform, while anyone under twelve will find the crabbing genuinely absorbing for an hour or so. You'll need a net (bring your own or check locally if they're hired), a bucket, and some bait - prawns or chicken work. The crabs are small enough that catching them feels like a genuine achievement rather than a certainty.

The stretch between Osea Leisure Park and Steeple Bay Holiday Park is dotted with these informal waterside spots, and this one has that slightly rougher charm of a place that's about the activity rather than the facilities. It's free to access and you can stay as long as you fancy. Weekday mornings are quieter if you prefer fewer people. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about crabbing, or thirty minutes if you're just passing through.

Worth fitting in if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Mill Beach Seaside Resort is closest - but it's not the sort of place that justifies a long drive on its own.
