Mistral Hole

The entrance to Mistral Hole sits tucked into the limestone landscape near Carnforth, and it's one of those places you'd miss entirely if you didn't know where to look. This is a proper cave system - nothing glitzy, no gift shop, no staged lighting. What you get is raw geology and the slightly eerie experience of squeezing into passages formed over millennia.

Inside, the passages open up more than you'd expect from the modest entrance. Bring a torch - a decent one, not your phone's pathetic torch mode - because the daylight dies quickly once you venture beyond the first chamber. The rock formations are the draw here: water-worn limestone walls, natural contours that make you realise how small you actually are.

This works best for walkers and geology types. Families with young kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes, but there's not much to "do" in the conventional sense. It's a scramble in places, so sensible footwear matters. And it's free, which seems almost criminal given how few truly free experiences like this still exist.

Allow a solid hour if you're going to explore properly, maybe less if you're just poking about the entrance. Time it for when you've already got decent daylight - the walk to Carnforth is pleasant enough, but you'll want to see where you're putting your feet.
