Mirror Pond

Mirror Pond sits just outside New Milton in Hampshire, a quiet stretch of water that does exactly what its name suggests - reflects the sky back at you on a still day. It's a modest affair, nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. You get a clean view of the water, some basic paths around it, and plenty of space to breathe.

Walkers will find it worth a detour if you're exploring the wider New Forest area. The pond itself won't take more than 30 to 40 minutes to circuit, so it works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. Families with young children might find it appeals for a quick stop - the water's safe to look at from the bank, and there's room for them to run around without much danger. Photographers occasionally show up hoping to catch reflections on a calm morning, which can be genuinely lovely.

There's no entrance fee as far as anyone can tell, and no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Early morning or late afternoon light treats the water kindly. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Black Knowl or Setthorns are closest at just over a mile away - it's an easy walk to fill an hour. The real appeal comes if you're already in the New Forest exploring the wider landscape. On its own, Mirror Pond is pleasant enough but forgettable. Paired with a proper forest walk or a stay at a nearby park, it becomes a useful waypoint rather than wasted time.
