Milton Morenish

The standing stones at Milton Morenish sit quietly above Loch Tay, a few miles outside Killin, and they're genuinely worth tracking down if you're staying in the area. There are three of them - Bronze Age markers that have been watching over the valley for something like four thousand years. You won't find crowds here, which is precisely the point.

Walking up to them takes maybe ten minutes from the road, and the views across the loch justify the leg stretch alone. The stones themselves are modest compared to Stonehenge or the Standing Stones up near Callanish, but there's something rather moving about standing beside something that old with barely another soul around. The landscape tells the story better than any information board could.

This works brilliantly as a morning detour if you're based at Loch Tay Highland Lodges - it's practically on the doorstep and costs nothing. History enthusiasts and walkers will get the most from it; young children might find the trudge tedious unless they're genuinely into archaeology. Allow an hour including the walk and time to stand about admiring the loch.

Go early or late in the day. The light changes everything, and you'll almost certainly have the place to yourself. It's one of those spots that reminds you why you bothered coming to Perthshire in the first place - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just ancient stone and proper Highland air.
