Creag an Lochain

Standing at 824 metres above sea level, this craggy Munro summit rewards serious walkers with proper Highland views across Loch Tay and the surrounding peaks. The route from Killin involves a steady climb through pine forest before breaking out onto open moorland, where the real work begins.

Fit hillwalkers will love the challenge, though it's definitely not one for casual day-trippers in trainers. The final approach to the summit cairn involves some scrambling over loose rock, and the weather can turn nasty without warning. Allow a full day for the round trip - most people take 6-8 hours depending on conditions.

On a clear day, the panoramic views stretch from Ben More to the Lawers range, making every step of that relentless ascent worthwhile. Cloud cover is common though, so check the forecast before setting off from Killin.

Families staying at nearby Loch Tay Highland Lodges or Tummel Valley Holiday Park might prefer the gentler walks around Loch Tay itself, but experienced hikers will find this peak a proper test. The mountain doesn't get the crowds of its more famous neighbours, which is half the appeal. Just make sure you're properly equipped with map, compass and waterproofs - this isn't a mountain that forgives poor preparation.
