Lochan a'Chaorainn

The walk to Lochan a'Chaorainn from Killin is what makes it worth the effort. The reward is a small, dark lochan tucked away in moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being within spitting distance of the A84.

What you get is a tarn rather than anything grand. The water's deep and still, ringed by heather and coarse grass, with the Tay Valley sprawling out behind you if you've got a clear day. It's the sort of place that appeals to keen walkers more than casual visitors - the view is lovely but understated, and if you're expecting dramatic Highland theatre, you'll be disappointed. Families with young kids will find it a bit of a stretch without proper reward at the end.

Timing-wise, give yourself two hours minimum if you're not a rapid walker. Early morning or late afternoon light works best here - midday can feel a bit flat. There's no visitor facilities whatsoever, so bring what you need.

It sits nicely as an add-on to a Loch Tay holiday. If you're staying at Loch Tay Highland Lodges, you're barely ten minutes away by car, making this a decent morning walk option before heading elsewhere. Loch Earn Leisure Park is a bit further out but equally accessible. The lochan works best if you're the sort who enjoys solitude and doesn't need manicured attractions.
