Millennium Wood

A sprawling woodland just outside Maldon that feels properly removed from the Essex coast rush. Millennium Wood is one of those forests where you can actually lose an afternoon without trying - the paths wind through decent-sized trees, and there's enough space that you won't feel like you're queuing to walk. The wood itself isn't ancient, which some might find a letdown, but it's been managed with walkers in mind, and the canopy's thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays relatively pleasant underfoot.

Walkers will find the most value here. It's the kind of place where you can do a proper loop without needing a map, though bringing one won't hurt. The paths are clear enough, though muddy patches crop up after rain. You're looking at anywhere from forty minutes to ninety minutes depending on which routes you choose - it's not massive, but it's not a quick dash either.

If you're staying at Mill Beach or Osea Leisure Park just down the road, this is a genuine plus. Beats sitting by the caravan on a grey afternoon, and it's close enough that you won't lose half a day getting there. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough; older children and keen walkers will stretch it further. The woodland itself doesn't have much wildlife drama or unusual features - it's straightforward English forest - but that's rather the point. Sometimes you just need trees and quiet.
