Mill Race Plantation

The woodland at Mill Race, just inland from Berwick-upon-Tweed, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works. Ancient trees crowd the riverside paths here, with the water doing most of the talking as it moves through the forest floor. It's properly atmospheric on an overcast day, less so when the sun's out and the crowds arrive.

Walkers will get the most from this. The paths wind through decent-sized woodland with enough variation to hold your attention for an hour or two, depending on how many detours you fancy. Kids won't be bored, but they won't be entertained either - this isn't a play area, it's a walk. History types might find the industrial past interesting enough to warrant a visit, though there's not much signage to guide you through it.

There's no admission charge as far as anyone can tell, and no fixed opening hours - you're essentially free to come and go. The nearest proper base is Berwick itself, about twenty minutes' drive south, but if you're staying at the Barn at Beal Restaurant & Campsite, you're only five and a half miles out. Haven Haggerston Castle is a shade further but equally convenient for morning or evening walks.

Go on a crisp autumn afternoon when the light's low and the trees look their best. Bring proper boots - it can get muddy. The paths aren't desperately well maintained, so don't expect manicured trails. That's part of the charm.
