Milecastle 30 (Limestone Corner)

You're standing on Hadrian's Wall itself - not the restored tourist section, but the real thing, crumbling and honest. Milecastle 30, also called Limestone Corner, is a Roman fortlet that once housed around thirty soldiers keeping watch over the northern frontier roughly two thousand years ago. What you actually see is the foundations and lower walls, enough to give you the layout of the barracks and gatehouse, though you'll need some imagination to flesh out the roofs and detail.

Historically minded visitors will find this absorbing - the name 'Limestone Corner' comes from the pale stone visible in the walls, and standing here you can trace how the Romans built methodically along this ridge. Families with older kids manage fine, though younger ones need a bit of context to stay engaged. This isn't a museum with interpretation boards everywhere; it's archaeology in its raw state, which is exactly why walkers love it.

Allow thirty minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to study the stonework and walk the Wall itself. Free, obviously - it's just land. The best time is late afternoon when the light turns the stone golden and you've got fewer people about.
