Milecastle 29 (Tower Tye)

You're standing on the remains of a Roman frontier post, seventeen centuries of weather and ploughing having reduced it to low stone ridges in a Northumberland pasture. Milecastle 29, also called Tower Tye, sits along Hadrian's Wall between Hexham and the higher Pennine stretches - a proper garrison where soldiers once watched the northern wilderness.

What you actually get here are the archaeological foundations. The ditch systems are visible, the barrack stone work if you know what to look for, and the sheer weight of Roman engineering even in ruin. It's not as immediately impressive as the fort at Chesters down the road, but that's exactly why it matters. This is what a working frontier looked like - small, functional, defended. A four-gate checkpoint rather than a grand statement.

Historians will find it genuinely worthwhile. Casual walkers benefit more from the wider Hadrian's Wall Path, which passes nearby and gives you the full Roman line stretched across the landscape. If you're combining it with Sycamore Glamping Pods nearby, you've got a solid afternoon - though don't bank on spending more than an hour on site unless you're seriously into Roman structures. The milecastle itself is free and open to wander, though there's no visitor facility or interpretation board.
