Midsummer Hill

Standing at 285 metres above sea level, this prominent hill fort offers some of the finest panoramic views across the Welsh borders and beyond. The climb up from Hollybush car park takes about 45 minutes of steady walking - not too taxing, but proper walking boots are definitely recommended for the sometimes muddy paths.

Families with older children will love the sense of achievement reaching the summit, though it's probably too much for little ones who tire easily. The earthwork remains of the Iron Age hillfort are still clearly visible, making it a cracking spot for anyone interested in ancient history. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Black Mountains in Wales and the Cotswolds to the east.

Walkers often combine Midsummer Hill with the nearby British Camp for a longer hike along the Malvern Hills ridge. The area can get busy on weekends, so early morning visits are best for peace and proper photo opportunities without other people's heads in shot.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Malvern like The Turbles or Swallowfields Retreat, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Allow at least three hours return journey including time to appreciate the views at the top - rushing defeats the point entirely.
