Herring's Coppice

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than this slice of Worcestershire countryside. Herring's Coppice spreads across the lower slopes near Malvern, a proper working woodland that's been managed for centuries using traditional coppicing methods. The name gives it away - this isn't some manicured park but a genuine piece of English forest heritage.

Walking the informal paths, you'll spot the telltale signs of old coppice management: multiple stems growing from ancient stumps where hazel and oak were regularly harvested. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn delivers that satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot. The woodland feels lived-in rather than preserved, which gives it real character.

Families with older children who don't mind proper muddy boots will love exploring here. Dog walkers get plenty of space to roam, though keep leads handy during nesting season. It's not signposted like a tourist attraction, so you'll need to do a bit of detective work to find the access points.
