Black Hill

Standing at 1,036 feet, this proper hill gives you cracking views across Worcestershire and the Welsh borders without the crowds that swarm over the main Malvern Ridge. The climb from the nearest car park takes about 45 minutes of steady walking through heathland and ancient woodland, with the final approach getting a bit steep but nothing too taxing for anyone reasonably fit.

Families with older kids will love it - there's something satisfying about reaching a proper summit, even if it's not quite as dramatic as the neighbouring peaks. The views west towards the Brecon Beacons are genuinely spectacular on a clear day, while looking east you can pick out the Cotswolds rolling away to the horizon.

What makes Black Hill special is the quiet. While tourists pile onto Worcester Beacon and the Worcestershire Beacon, this feels like your own private viewpoint. The moorland up top has a wild, almost Scottish feel that's quite unexpected in the Midlands.

For those staying at the nearby holiday parks around Malvern - The Turbles or Swallowfields Retreat are both within three miles - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon expedition. Allow three hours for the round trip including time to appreciate the views. Early morning visits are particularly rewarding when mist clings to the valleys below.
