Middleton Top Cafe, Shop & Visitors Center

The old engine house at Middleton Top has been converted into a proper working visitor centre, and it's the sort of place that grows on you once you understand what you're looking at. This is where the Middleton Top Incline once hauled coal trucks up a steep gradient - the engineering was genuinely clever for the 1820s. The cafe does decent coffee and the usual tea-and-cake offerings, nothing fancy but entirely welcome after a walk. The shop stocks local bits and hiking maps, which is useful since the High Peak Trail runs right past here.

Walkers will get the most from this stop. You're looking at an hour or so to poke around the visitor centre and absorb what the incline actually did, then head out along the trail itself - the gradient is visible underfoot if you know what to look for. Families with younger kids might find it interesting for fifteen minutes, but don't expect them to be gripped by Victorian railway engineering.

It's free to wander about and use the cafe, though there may be a small charge for the visitor centre proper - worth checking before you go. The location works perfectly if you're based at somewhere like Mulino Lodge near Ashbourne, which is only five miles or so away. That's close enough for a morning trip without it eating into your whole day. Come midweek if you want peace and quiet. Weekends bring the Peak District crowds.
