Middleham Castle

The ruins of Middleham Castle sit on high ground overlooking the River Tees, and on a clear day you get proper views across County Durham's rolling countryside. This is Norman defensive architecture at its most honest - a square keep that once housed medieval nobility, now roofless but still commanding. The outer walls still stand in places, enough to give you a real sense of the fortress it was.

You're looking at the bones of a 12th-century stronghold, the sort of place where serious business happened. Walking the crumbling stone floors and climbing what's left of the internal stairs, you start to piece together how people actually lived here centuries ago. It's not a manicured heritage site with information boards on every corner - this is more raw archaeology, which some will find brilliant and others might find a bit sparse.

Historically minded adults and keen walkers will get the most from it. Children might manage 45 minutes to an hour before asking what's for lunch. The site feels lonely in winter, which honestly works in its favour - you're not fighting crowds.

Free access as far as we can tell, though check locally before driving over from Stockton-on-Tees. The nearby caravan parks - Donnewell Farm, Woodside Ridge, Grove Farm and Strawberry Hill Farm - are all within reasonable range if you're basing yourself in the area for a longer break. Allow two hours if you want to properly explore and sit with the views. Spring and autumn light hits these ruins particularly well.
