Mickleden Valley

The walk up Mickleden Valley from Ambleside takes you into proper Lake District fell country without the crowds you'd find on the main tourist routes. It's a straightforward push up a narrow gorge with a beck running alongside - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare round here.

The valley itself isn't dramatic in an obvious way. No waterfalls or alpine lakes at the top, just steep sides covered in bracken and scattered trees, eventually opening onto the fells. The walk suits walkers of moderate fitness - reckon on a couple of hours up to the valley head and back. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to fell walking; younger ones might struggle with the sustained gradient.

Timing matters. Go early or on a weekday if you want solitude. Summer weekends can feel busy even here. The path can be boggy after rain, so proper boots aren't optional.

It feeds into the broader fell system, so if you're an experienced walker, you can link it with other routes.
