Merevale Lake

The lake sits quietly on the Merevale estate, just outside Atherstone, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick drive-by. You get a decent walk around the water with decent views across, and the whole thing feels properly rural - you're not fighting crowds here. It's good for families who fancy a gentle stroll without the theatrics. Dog walkers love it. Bird watchers too, if you're into that.

There's not much in the way of facilities that I could find, so come prepared - bring your own drinks and snacks rather than expecting a café. The walk takes a good hour if you go the long way round, less if you're just after a quick circuit. Free access as far as I can tell, though you'll want to check locally when you book because information's thin on the ground.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Atherstone Stables is closest at under two miles - this makes a solid half-morning activity to break up the holiday. It's not going to be the highlight of your trip, but it's exactly what you need when someone wants fresh air and the kids are getting restless in the caravan. The real appeal is the peace and quiet. In a part of Leicestershire that doesn't shout about itself, that's actually quite rare.
