Bonobos of the Congo Basin - Twycross Zoo

The bonobo enclosure at Twycross Zoo is genuinely worth stopping for if you're passing through Leicestershire. These apes are nothing like what you see on nature documentaries - watching them move about with an almost human-like grace is properly unsettling in the best way. They're our closest living relatives genetically, and standing a few metres away from them hammers that home in a way no textbook can.

The zoo itself sits just outside Atherstone, making it an easy half-day detour if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like New Forest View or Bosworth Lakeside Lodges. Kids will spend at least an hour here even if they're not zoo fanatics - the bonobos are active, curious, and far more engaging than you'd expect. Adult visitors tend to linger longest, partly because the viewing area is well-designed and partly because once you start watching them, you don't want to leave.

It's not a massive exhibit compared to some zoos, but that works in its favour. You're not trudging around for hours. Twycross operates year-round, though spring through autumn gives you the best chance of seeing them outdoors rather than in indoor areas. Admission isn't free, but the zoo runs the enclosure as part of a broader conservation project for endangered primates - the money actually goes somewhere worthwhile.
