Medieval Village of Newsham

Stone foundations and earthwork ridges are all that remain of this abandoned medieval settlement, scattered across farmland between Bridlington and the coast. Walking through the site, you can still make out the rectangular outlines of houses, a village street, and what appears to be a manor house at the northern end. The village was likely deserted during the 14th or 15th centuries, possibly due to plague or economic decline.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder here, though there's not much for younger children beyond a short countryside walk. The remains are subtle - more lumps and bumps in the grass than dramatic ruins - so you need a bit of imagination to picture the community that once thrived here. Best visited on a clear day when the shadows help define the earthworks.

Access is via public footpaths across working farmland, so stick to marked routes and watch for livestock. Allow an hour to explore properly, including the walk from the nearest parking. It's a peaceful spot that pairs well with a visit to nearby Flamborough Head, and makes for an interesting historical detour if you're staying at Haven Thornwick Bay or the other coastal parks around Bridlington. Free to visit, though finding it requires a decent map and some determination.
