Meall nan Aighean

The walk up Meall nan Aighean from Pitlochry is a proper hill rather than a fell, and that's exactly what makes it appealing. You get real elevation gain - roughly 600 metres - without needing scrambling skills or technical gear, just decent legs and a bit of determination.

The route itself winds through mixed woodland before opening out onto moorland with views across Perthshire that stretch for miles on a clear day. Pitlochry sits below like a toy town, and the Tummel Valley spreads out in front. It's the sort of walk where you feel like you've actually gone somewhere rather than just trudged around the block.

Walkers will find this a solid three to four hour round trip depending on fitness. Come in autumn when the light's golden and the midges have buggered off. Summer can be buggy, and winter needs proper boots if there's been rain. The path's well-trodden but boggy in places - waterproof gaiters aren't a bad shout.

Families with teenagers will get something from this. Younger kids might find it a slog without entertainment. History types won't find much up here beyond the landscape itself, but that's rather the point.

It's ambitious enough to feel like an achievement, but not so technical that you need guiding. Park up in Pitlochry itself and head for the eastern approach - you'll work it out from there.
