Meall Corranaich

The walk up Meall Corranaich takes about two and a half hours if you're moving at a decent pace, and you'll climb roughly 700 metres from the car park near Killin. It's a proper hill rather than a casual stroll - the path gets steep in places and the weather can turn quickly, so waterproofs aren't optional even if it looks fine in the village.

What you get for your effort is a cracking 360-degree view across Perthshire. On a clear day you can see Loch Tay sprawled out below, Ben Lawers looming nearby, and the wider landscape rolling away towards the Ochil Hills. The summit itself is a cairn, nothing fancy, but the vantage point is genuine.

This is walkers' terrain, pure and simple. If your kids are confident on hills and you don't mind a few hours away from the car, they'll find the sense of achievement worthwhile. Fair-weather hikers might find it a bit relentless for what it is - there's no café at the top, no shelter worth mentioning, and the descent is just as knackering as the way up.

Going from Loch Tay Highland Lodges makes logical sense if you're based in the area. Killin itself has parking and basic supplies, and the walk starts from there. Spring and summer give you the best conditions, but autumn brings proper clarity to the views. Winter's fine if you know what you're doing with navigation and gear.
