Meadows Park

The flat ground beside Dornoch opens up into something rather special - Meadows Park is a proper nature reserve where you can actually see what the Scottish Highlands looked like before everything got managed to death. Moorland, wetland, the works. You're looking at open space that shifts with the seasons, which means visiting in spring gives you wildflowers, summer brings the insects and birds, autumn turns everything golden. Winter's a bit bleak but honestly that's when it feels most real.

It's a walkers' spot through and through. Not dramatic cliff views or anything like that - this is quieter country. You'll be out on paths through heather and rough grass, keeping an eye out for red squirrels, golden eagles if you're lucky, and the usual moorland birds. Birdwatchers will have their binoculars out for hours. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, but older children who actually want to spot wildlife will get genuine value here.

The nearest proper base is Dornoch itself, just half a mile away. Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park sits right on the doorstep - 4.2 stars and genuinely convenient for anyone wanting to explore the reserve without driving. Dornoch Firth Caravan Park is also close enough if that's full. Both work well for a few days based in the area, mixing the nature reserve with whatever else Sutherland has on offer.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. It's free to access, naturally. Spring or early summer hits the sweet spot - enough colour and activity to make the walk worthwhile.
