Matchams

Matchams sits quietly between Ringwood and the forest proper, giving you a taste of Dorset's gentler landscapes. The walk up is straightforward enough for most families, though little ones might need a piggyback on the steeper bits.

From the top you'll get lovely views across the forest canopy towards the coast on clear days. It's not spectacular - don't expect Instagram-worthy panoramas - but there's something satisfying about earning your vista with a bit of legwork. The heathland itself is the real draw here, particularly stunning when the gorse and heather are in bloom during late summer.

Walkers will appreciate this as part of longer New Forest rambles, while families staying at nearby Forest Edge or Oakdene Forest Park will find it makes a decent morning's outing. Allow a couple of hours including the walk and some time at the top. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, and you'll often spot deer picking their way through the bracken.
