Fryer Field Recreation Ground

You'll find Fryer Field just outside Ringwood, a proper local nature reserve that doesn't make much fuss about itself. It's the kind of place where you actually see wildlife - heathland birds, insects, the occasional adder if you're lucky - rather than just walking round manicured paths reading interpretation boards.

The reserve itself is fairly open heath with patches of scrub and woodland. You can wander the trails at your own pace, and it's genuinely peaceful. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means it stays quiet. If you're staying at Ashley Heath Caravan Park just two miles away, it's an easy morning walk. Fernwood Glamping is a bit further out but still within reach if you fancy a nature fix alongside your glamping break.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not dramatic scenery - no views that'll stop you in your tracks - but it's proper English heathland ecology, and that appeals if you're into spotting species or just want somewhere genuinely wild on your doorstep. Kids might manage an hour here, though there's nothing to do but look and listen. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent shoes are essential.

Best visited in spring or early summer when the wildlife is active and the heath's flowering. Summer can get buzzy with insects - not unpleasant, just worth knowing. There's no entry charge that I'm aware of, and you can spend as little as half an hour or stretch it to a couple of hours depending on how thorough you want to be.
