Week Wood

Walk into Week Wood and you're immediately swallowed by beech trees so tall they block out half the sky. It's a proper forest, the kind where you actually feel removed from things - no tea shops, no interpretation boards, just woodland doing what it does best.

The main draw here is straightforward: a network of paths that wind through dense mature forest. On a quiet morning you might see nothing but squirrels and the occasional dog walker, which is exactly the point. The paths are reasonably well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, so good boots matter. Most people allow anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how lost they want to get.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy walking rather than ticking off viewpoints. Kids will have the most fun if they're old enough to spot wildlife and scramble over fallen logs without needing constant distraction. Under-fives will get bored within twenty minutes. It's also the sort of place where local history types come away disappointed - there's nothing dramatic here, no ancient monuments or ruins, just woodland that's probably looked much the same for centuries.

Christchurch is three miles north and makes a logical base if you're exploring the area. If you're staying at Ashley Heath Caravan Park, Week Wood is close enough for an afternoon outing without feeling like you've driven far. The real value is as a breather between proper attractions, not as a destination in itself. Go if you want quiet. Skip if you need something to actually do.
