Martin's Wood

Ancient oaks and twisted hornbeams make up this proper Essex woodland, where the canopy is dense enough to feel like you've stepped into another era altogether. Martin's Wood sits east of Saffron Walden, and it's the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it - no visitor centre, no car park with a gift shop, just trees doing what they've done for centuries.

The woodland floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf litter and moss. Spring brings bluebells that genuinely take your breath away; autumn turns the whole place into a study of rust and gold. There are paths threading through, though they're not manicured or signed - you need to pay attention, especially when it rains and everything blurs into shadow and green.

This works best for walkers who actually want to walk, rather than those after a quick stroll and a cafe pit-stop. History buffs will appreciate that you're moving through landscape that's been woodland for centuries, possibly longer. Kids enjoy it if they're the type to hunt for insects and build stick dens; the under-fives might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes.

Allow a good hour or two depending on how lost you want to get. Free to enter.
