Martindale Forest

The walk through Martindale Forest, just a short drive from Penrith, takes you into proper Lake District woodland - steep hillsides clothed in mixed trees with Ullswater visible through the gaps if you know where to look. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with benches and interpretation boards. This is a genuine working forest where you follow tracks rather than formal paths, which means it feels rather more like an adventure than a stroll.

The forest works best for walkers who actually want to walk, rather than families after a quick hour out. The terrain is uneven and occasionally muddy, even when it hasn't rained much - decent boots are worth the effort. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Sykeside Camping or Ullswater Holiday Park, it's an excellent morning option before the weather turns or the light fades early in winter.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're exploring properly, though you can do shorter loops. Spring brings bluebells in places, and autumn colours are genuinely lovely when the deciduous trees turn. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under heavy leaf cover, and midges can be tiresome.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no car park with facilities. You'll find a small parking area and that's your lot. Free access, as far as anyone can tell, though it's the sort of place where you'd check locally given it's a working forest. Not somewhere to bring reluctant walkers, but if your lot actually enjoys being outdoors, you won't waste the journey.
