Marine Theatre

The Marine Theatre sits right on the seafront at Bridport, and it's one of those proper local treasures that could easily disappear if it didn't have people fighting for it. It's a working theatre, not a museum piece - you come here to catch a show, not just to look at the building, though the Victorian-era architecture is worth a glance when you arrive.

The programme runs year-round with a decent mix of drama, comedy, musicals, and the occasional film screening. Summer gets busier with touring productions and family shows, which makes sense given you've got Seadown and Newlands holiday parks within walking distance. Winter's quieter but that's sometimes when the best stuff happens - local theatre groups do their own productions, and tickets are usually cheaper.

You'll need to check their website for what's on and admission prices, as these shift with the season. Most shows run around two hours, so it's an evening outing rather than a quick visit. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Golden Cap and Coppet Hill are a bit further out but still manageable - it's worth planning an evening around whatever's showing. The seafront location means you can grab fish and chips beforehand and have a walk along the beach, which is the proper way to do it.

It's not somewhere you'd visit *just* for the building, but if you're on a Dorset coast break and there's something on that appeals to you, don't skip it. Bridport's got enough going on otherwise - independent shops, decent pubs - so you won't be left disappointed if the theatre's dark.
