Mardy Park

The walk into Mardy Park from Hereford takes you through proper woodland, the sort where you actually notice the quiet. It's a nature reserve that rewards curiosity rather than demanding it - there's no grand entrance or visitor centre, just pathways through habitat that's been left largely to its own devices.

You'll find woodland birds here, amphibians in the wetland areas, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer invertebrates that thrive in undisturbed ground. It's the kind of place where a 20-minute potter becomes an hour without you noticing. Photographers and naturalists get the most from it; families with restless toddlers might find it a bit too subtle. The reserve works best in spring and early summer when there's actually something happening in the undergrowth and the birds are vocal.

There's no fee to my knowledge, though you should check before heading out. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, though an energetic walker could cover the main routes in 40 minutes. The paths can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

It's not a showstopper destination - you won't travel across the Midlands just for this - but as part of a Hereford weekend, it slots in nicely. The county's got plenty of proper outdoor space, and Mardy gives you a genuine nature experience without the visitor crowds.
