Mardy Field

A sprawling nature reserve just outside Hereford, Mardy Field is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Once you're there, it's clear why locals keep coming back. The open grassland and wetland areas attract a serious variety of birdlife - you'll spot everything from lapwings to redshank if you time it right, especially in spring and autumn when migration gets going.

The walking is gentle and undemanding, which makes it ideal for families with younger children or anyone wanting a straightforward ramble without elevation gain. There's something quite meditative about working through the reserve on foot, pausing at occasional viewpoints to scan the horizon. The light changes quickly across these open fields, so the place feels different at different times of day.

It's free to visit, and while there aren't facilities to speak of, that's part of its appeal - this is active nature reserve work rather than packaged visitor experience. Bring binoculars if you're interested in birdwatching, and allow an hour or so for a proper explore. Wellies are sensible footwear, especially in winter months when the ground gets boggy.
